Microsoft Word provides built-in tools for creating and arranging different types of flowcharts. You can create your own flowchart by using different shapes and SmartArt. When working with shapes in any Office application, it’s always useful to use gridlines to make sure everything is sized and placed correctly.
Flowchart Designer is a great app for mac to try first. You can choose from basic, equation, rectangle, and flowchart objects. Just pick one and then drag and drop it onto the canvas. Insert duplicate objects by double-clicking a blue arrow and to add a connector, just drag the blue circle to another object. You can pop in text easily for all shapes and include labels for connectors.
The diamond symbolizes that a decision needs to be made. If there are only two choices, you can draw arrows directly from the diamond to the next step (example on the left). If there are more than two choices, you can draw them neatly by copying the example on the right.
Which flowchart shape should you use? If you are new to flowcharting, the large number of shapes can be intimidating. You should care because knowing how to flowchart is like having access to a Universal language which makes it possible to communicate all sorts of things with all sorts of people, and that’s pretty cool.
